He has spent over 13 years in Russia, first as an exchange student at Leningrad State University. After then the Soviet Union and Russia continued to play a large role throughout his personal and professional lives. He has been a career diplomat, working in the U.S. Department of State headquarters in Washington D.C. and serving at Embassy posts in Hungary, Indonesia and three tours at the Embassy in Moscow.
